The start page
The start page is what you see when you open Linea Codex without a project open. It’s your home base for managing projects and getting genealogy into the app.
Your project list
Section titled “Your project list”Every project you’ve worked on appears in the list, most recent first. Each entry shows the project’s name and key details, with actions to:
- Open the project in the workspace.
- Rename it.
- Delete it from local storage.
Projects are stored privately on your device — see Where your data lives.
Import an existing file
Section titled “Import an existing file”Choose Import and pick a .ged file (GEDCOM 5.5, 5.5.1, or 7.0). Linea Codex parses it into a
version-independent model and stores it locally as a new project.
Encoding is detected for you
Section titled “Encoding is detected for you”GEDCOM files come in several text encodings, including the older ANSEL encoding used by many legacy programs. You don’t need to know which one your file uses — Linea Codex detects the encoding automatically and decodes your names and places correctly. The import dialog shows you the detected encoding so you can confirm it, and if the encoding can’t be determined it’s flagged so you can pick the right one from the list before importing.
Want the details of how detection works, or need to override it? See Encoding & ANSEL.
Start a new project
Section titled “Start a new project”Choose New project to begin an empty tree. You’ll pick the GEDCOM version to author in (5.5, 5.5.1, or 7.0); the app sets up a valid, empty document for that version, ready for you to add records.
Import a project archive
Section titled “Import a project archive”If you previously exported a full project archive (GEDCOM plus its media files), import it here to restore the whole project, attachments and all.
Once a project is open, you’ll land in the workspace — take the tour →.
